After receiving a higher level degree, employers are expecting a baseline of expertise in a specific field, but they are also expecting intangible skills, such as conflict resolution, project management, and professionalism. Numerous studies have shown that there is a deficit in leadership and management expertise from individuals with higher level scientific education. During this presentation, attendees will: (1) gain an understanding of why leadership training is an essential part of graduate education, regardless of the field (2) critically evaluate if they have gained leadership skills and self-awareness from their graduate program (3) learn how to develop a leadership portfolio outside of classwork (4) be able to identify strengths and weaknesses in their own leadership profile (5) be able to recommend different leadership assessment programs to incorporate in their own graduate program.
