Abstract
Over 46 million people over the age of 12 in America are dealing with a substance use disorder14. Roughly 30 million people suffer from alcoholism and 24 million people have a drug use disorder. These people may be unable to perform daily tasks or hold a job due to their disorder. Even with there being increased help available, only 6% of people with a substance use disorder are receiving treatment14. Without receiving the help that they need, people with substance use disorders may suffer long term consequences, such as difficulty maintaining a job, financial troubles, driving accidents, health issues including mental health problems, and more. Reviewing guidelines can help providers better support patients and encourage them to get the help they need. The goal of this article is to provide evidence-based guidelines for providers when managing and treating substance related and addictive disorders.
