Abstract

Vaccine hesitancy poses a significant global health concern and is becoming more prevalent in countries around the world. This paper delves into the complex phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy, aiming to summarize the major underlying causes, as well as the best approach to discussing vaccination with a hesitant patient. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, this study identifies several key factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy, including risk-benefit, lack of knowledge, and cultural or religious issues. In order for providers to feel confident discussing vaccination with hesitant patients, they must first understand the rationale that leads to hesitancy. Building up on this understanding, this paper then discusses strategies for approaching a conversation with a vaccine hesitant patient. Identifying each patient's specific rationale and addressing it head on with relevant evidence-based information is crucial when discussing vaccination. Ending by confidently recommending vaccination can build patient confidence in both their provider as well as the vaccines offered to them. This paper aims to empower providers to feel confident discussing vaccination with hesitant patients by providing them with both the background and the relevant tools. Through direct patient interactions, providers can assist in combating the public health threat posed by vaccine hesitancy.
