Abstract
According to the CDC, as of January 2023, 6.2 million American adults have heart failure. This condition is prevalent in the population and difficult to live with. Traditional approaches to treatment of heart failure consist of medications to control blood pressure and heart rate, pacemakers to correct abnormal rhythms, lifestyle modifications, and eventually heart transplantation or other surgery. While the mainstay of heart failure treatment has come a long way, many patients are still severely limited in their daily functions due to their condition. The Optimizer Smart implantable device from Impulse Dynamics, FDA approved in 2019, increases the strength at which the heart can pump, and has been shown to improve the symptoms of heart failure patients already being treated by traditional methods, all while being minimally invasive and low risk. Based on the results of current studies and trials, the Optimizer Smart should be considered in the management of heart failure patients. With the Optimizer being a new device, it is important to educate healthcare providers on its function and efficacy in order to increase its usage.
