Abstract
Currently there are limited devices on the market that help with smoking cessation. With the current options for smoking cessation including behavioral and pharmacological, there is only a 7.4% success rate for cessation within a year of attempting among United States adults. An increasing amount of research has been conducted evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for treatment resistant tobacco use disorder with promising results. Compared to pharmacological approaches, rTMS has similar success rates and a comparable safety profile with studies finding that the cessation rate for rTMS is around 23.81%, compared to the 12% cessation rate with pharmacological approaches.Currently there are no articles or statistics evaluating how often primary care providers refer patients to rTMS for smoking cessation. This article will attempt to close the gap in knowledge about rTMS and improve education about resources related to rTMS for treatment resistant tobacco use disorder in order to improve utilization of this device for smoking cessation.
