Abstract

Appendicitis remains one of the most common causes of acute abdominal pain in the adult patient. Associated morbidity and mortality are significantly mitigated by prompt diagnosis and treatment, making the maintenance of clinical acuity a priority for medical providers in various settings. Recent clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of nonoperative management with antimicrobials promise to change the course of clinical decision-making in treating uncomplicated acute appendicitis. Therefore, it is now imperative that the most recent data and changing practices be understood in order to provide the most evidence-based and patient-centered care.
