Abstract
Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) have gained greater attention and popularity over the past few decades as promising and effective contraceptive methods. The history and future of the IUD is long standing and ever evolving. Innovation over the 1900s and 2000s has developed these devices into the effective and safe long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) that are increasingly being used in clinical practice today. In more recent years, IUDs have been studied for their extent of effectiveness and medical indications beyond contraception. This new research has significantly impacted the clinical application of IUDs, in their ability to prevent unwanted pregnancies for longer durations and to treat gynecological diseases. This poster presentation aims to highlight the differences between current IUDs, clarify the extent and length effectiveness of various IUDs based on new FDA approvals, analyze the increase in favorability of IUDs for contraception, address additional data regarding IUD longevity beyond current approvals, understand how IUDs impact unintended pregnancies and family planning and lastly address misconceptions and barriers toward IUD usage.
