Abstract
Tinnitus is a symptom described as “conscious awareness of sound in the absence of an external auditory stimulus”2. Patients are experiencing the constant buzzing, ringing, and pulsing of tinnitus as they go through their daily lives. This symptom impacts patient’s quality of life, causing difficulty concentrating, depression, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.4 These impacts can influence a patient’s mental health, even leading to suicidal thoughts. It is critical that patients with tinnitus are screened with appropriate suicidal screening tools including the C-SSRS, SBQ, PSS-2, and other validated screening methods. Screening patients with tinnitus for suicidal ideation will help patients receive optimal care and resources they need to prevent poor mental health and even suicide.
