Abstract

Currently, prostate cancer is among the most common malignancies in developed countries. The disease and its treatment exact a significant physical, emotional, and financial toll on the 1 in 9 adult men in the US it will afflict over their lifetime. Treatment depends on the Gleason score (a grade from 1-5 based on structural patterns of malignant cells), presence of metastasis, and age and health of the affected person. Treatment modalities include surgery, radiation, and chemohormonal drugs, either alone or in combination. Nevertheless, novel approaches are being investigated to reduce prostate cancer metastases that have less psychological and physiological burden. Whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) as an adjunct to standard prostate cancer treatment is explored in this review of literature. At this time there is little evidence for recommendation of WBH in those being treated for prostate cancer, though it is clear that more research is necessary.
