Abstract
This research examines the ways in which children of impoverished families and communities are put at a disadvantage due to the the correlation between poverty and social exclusion, analyzing several African-American children who grew up below the poverty line. Social exclusion in poor communities and neighborhoods is so hindering to a person’s development that they are not able to improve their life circumstances and raise themselves out of poverty. The second part of the research looks at the history of racial inequality in film as well as the marginalization of women of color in the entertainment industry today. Viola Davis, an award-winning American actress and producer, has had to face these obstacles both in her career and her personal life, and yet she continues to overcome the impediments that limited her for so long.
