Abstract
Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that affects 1 out of every 365 black births. It can impact every aspect of a person’s life due to the pain crises it causes among its other symptoms. Sickle cell anemia has many symptoms that an individual may experience including anemia, pain episodes, blood clots, joint pain, swelling of hands and feet, neuropathic pain, frequent infections, delayed growth or puberty, and vision problems. Although sickle cell anemia is a chronic illness that patients will always have to manage, there are modalities that can help minimize symptoms and prevent complications minimizing permanent damage. It is especially important to manage the disease early in life to establish healthy habits and empower patients to be involved in their disease management. This presentation aims to provide guidance on the chronic management of sickle cell anemia in pediatrics in the areas of prevention, treatment, and palliation.
