Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very prevalent disease in the US that has an extraordinary cost burden on the affected patients. The most common joints that are affected by OA are the knee and the hip. Although many patients with hip OA have relief of symptoms with non-surgical therapies, the only definitive treatment is a joint replacement. Given increased risk of adverse outcomes in revision surgery, it is a high priority to perform the surgery on the joint only once. In order to better reduce the need for revision surgery and have the best possible outcome for patients with hip OA, the longevity of hip replacement must be considered, in addition to exploring any advantages, disadvantages, or differences in longevity of the various joint materials used in the hip replacement.
