Abstract

Treatment resistant depression(TRD) is something which has yet to be assigned a standard definition across different practice guidelines, textbooks, and clinical trials. Definitions have ranged from failure to respond to one treatment of antidepressant monotherapy to depression that necessitates electroconvulsive therapy(ECT). In light of this lack of consensus, this article will aim to help the clinician better identify patients suffering from TRD. Coupled with the spate of novel approaches that have been implemented in recent years to address TRD including transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS) and ketamine use, a review of the newest evidence for treating TRD can better help the clinician manage this vulnerable patient population.
