Abstract

Some of the most common mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, have been treated traditionally with pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy with success. Despite this success, providers and patients are exploring more holistic treatment options due to high cost and lack of accessibility. Recent studies have shown the benefits of a nutritious diet and aerobic exercise not only physically but mentally. A growing body of research has established a strong link between improving mental health conditions and certain patterns of diet and exercise, which could be a very influential part of mental health treatment plans, if implemented correctly. When used in combination with the appropriate pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, the evidence suggests lifestyle and dietary modifications can improve and even prevent mental health conditions.
