Abstract

The current recommendations for treating dysplastic nevi vary based on the degree of dysplasia but often includes full excision of the lesion to minimize the risk of melanoma. This study reviews the literature regarding consistency between pathologists in classifying these lesions and the rates of transformation into melanoma. Although more research is needed, there seems to be evidence that dysplastic nevi have low to no risk of becoming melanoma. Due to the lack of confidence in this and variations in pathology reports, full excision of lesions should still be performed as indicated.
