Abstract

This paper intends to shed light on an uncommon cause of Acute Interstitial Nephritis (AIN) by providing a case report of an individual who was admitted to the hospital with an Acute Kidney Injury. After a series of non-invasive and invasive testing, it was determined this individual had Acute Interstitial Nephritis caused by the medication Diltiazem. Since this is not a common cause of kidney injury, it is important to examine how any medication can cause AIN and this disease must always be on the differential list when someone has a recent medication change and an elevated creatinine. Laboratory findings can be unrevealing, leading to a delay in treatment. While many individuals have a positive prognosis, some may have End Stage Renal Disease and have deficits in kidney function for life.
