Abstract
Close attention to detail is necessary in the peri-operative period and when creating a post-operative plan for any surgical patient. When a patient comes from the operating room to the PACU, it is the responsibility of the surgical PA to examine the patient, write a post-operative note, and create a plan. It is imperative to address the anticoagulant regimen that you will be ordering for the patient post-operatively. The literature supports the use of a multi-modal approach to prevent deep vein thromboses and pulmonary embolism. Research suggests that regardless of ambulation status, 10-30% of people will die within one month of diagnosis of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and that sudden death is the first symptom in about one-fourth of people with a pulmonary embolism (PE) which is why prophylaxis is so significant (“Data and Statistics on Venous Thromboembolism,” 2020).
