Abstract
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial disorder affecting reproductive-aged women across the globe. Increasing numbers of women are becoming aware of this condition and are seeking medical treatment and guidance. PCOS is a heritable endocrine disorder, signifying that it contains a genetic component that affects hormone balance in the body. The defining characteristics to look out for in women with PCOS are polycystic ovaries, excess androgen production, and irregular menstrual cycles. However, it is important to recognize that there is significant inter-individual variation in clinical presentation. This article aims to shed light on the different combinations of symptoms one could encounter as a clinician, as well as the evolution of the criteria used to diagnose PCOS. In addition, mid-level practitioners will be able to recognize important aspects of the history and physical and use that in guiding their ultimate tailored treatment plan based on symptom management and new advancements in research.
