Abstract
Understanding a disease’s etiology and physiologic pathway helps clinicians determine how to best treat it. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, incapacitating patients and causing rising healthcare costs. This necessitates effective intervention. Anti-depressants, currently available, may not be the ultimate solution. Current psychiatric medications have several potential downsides: unpleasant side effects, possible risks and decreased efficacy over time. This has lead researchers to seek more answers regarding the factors influencing depression, in an effort to help clinicians uncover potential alternative or adjunctive treatment.
