Abstract

In the United States nearly half of the adult population has hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure. Lifestyle modifications including low sodium diets and increasing physical activity, are typically recommended prior to beginning antihypertensive therapy. Antihypertensive medications such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, thiazide diuretics, calcium channel blockers and beta blockers are proven ways to lower blood pressure. Lifestyle modifications to assist in weight reduction are a large part of reversing elevated blood pressure and more research is necessary to determine specific physical activities to achieve optimum benefits. Yoga may be a beneficial addition to a patient’s lifestyle to assist in lowering blood pressure.
