Abstract

With the increasing number of children being diagnosed with autism there is also an increasing number of parents experiencing caregiver burnout because of this diagnosis. Experiencing burnout while caring for an individual who depends on you for quality care can have serious negative effects on the parent but also the individual who needs support. In the following literature effective interventions to reduce caregiver burnout in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder were analyzed. First, caregiver burnout in parents of children with autism was examined. Following, effective interventions such as different social support, education training, and mind-body interventions were analyzed in effectiveness in reducing caregiver burnout in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. After reviewing the literature, I understand that if parents are experiencing burnout, they will not be able to properly fulfill their responsibilities which can be detrimental while raising a child with autism. In order to combat the burnout that parents of children with autism experience, there are many interventions in which parents report as being effective in reducing their burnout. These interventions are having a strong social support network, having educational training on autism and how to properly raise a child with autism, and mind- body interventions which help to relax the mind and body.
