Postconcussion Symptoms: Approach to Clinical Assessment, Classification, and Treatment

Kristin Cornell

Abstract

The general lack of consensus regarding the diagnosis of postconcussion syndrome has led to confusion among medical providers. Recent controversy regarding the condition has led to conceptual shift toward treating individual symptom presentation rather than treating a condition in and of itself. Lack of evidence surrounding assessment and treatment guidelines leaves opportunity for misdiagnosis or improper treatment and may potentially prolong symptoms. Postconcussion symptoms can place a significant burden on the patient, whether manifesting as difficulty with daily activities, reduced ability to work, decreased time spent with loved ones, or socioeconomic struggles. Patients often report feeling lonely and have difficulty coping with the effects of their injury. Having a better understanding of assessment and management of postconcussion symptoms can lead to improved physical, psychological, and emotional outcomes.
