Abstract

Auto-brewery syndrome (ABS) is a rare condition where fungi and bacteria of the small intestine ferment ingested carbohydrates into alcohol. Patients with this condition have quantitatively elevated blood alcohol levels after consuming no alcohol whatsoever. The symptoms of ABS mimic those of alcohol intoxication or a hangover. Because many of these symptoms are non-specific, the diagnosis of ABS is often elusive. For some patients, diagnosis occurs after an arrest for driving under the influence. Potentially promising treatments for ABS include dietary changes, antifungal medications, and, in rare cases, surgery. Proper management of this disease is important not just for a patient’s overall health and nutrition, but also because the recurrent intoxication caused by ABS can negatively impact a patient’s job, relationships, and safety.
