Abstract

Childhood obesity has been a growing problem in the United States and unlike other health concerns, obesity is a preventable condition that ultimately leads to billions in avoidable healthcare spending. While other health conditions have concise preventive screening recommendations, it becomes the responsibility of the provider to dedicate time to counsel patients on individualized nutrition recommendations in a brief primary care visit. Considering the serious health implications of obesity and short primary care visits, the initial advice and recommendations made by primary care providers should include direct action points that are realistic and manageable for patients to implement.
