Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most diagnosed chronic functional disorder in Western populations. Associated symptoms include abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, bloating, and changes in quality of life. The standard first-line treatment usually includes lifestyle modifications, with the addition of antispasmodics or opioid agonists if refractory. These drugs are associated with several significant side effects but are often avoided. Peppermint oil, derived from the Mentha Piperita herb, has been used as a treatment in abdominal pain in the past. Therefore this review analyzes the use of peppermint oil for symptom management in patients suffering from IBS.
